I am a Counselling Psychologist in private practice in Randhart, Alberton, in the South of Johannesburg. I previously practiced in Sunward Park, Boksburg, on the East Rand of Johannesburg.
I completed my studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. My qualifications are a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and SASL: South African Sign Language) [BA], Bachelor of Arts - Honours in Psychology [BA Hons], BPsyc Equivalent (Psychometrist), and Masters in Community-Based Counselling Psychology [MACC]. I specialized in psychotherapy, psychological assessment and community psychology with individuals of different ages and walks of life. I completed my internship at Epworth Children's Village Therapy and Assessment Centre. This included working with children, adolescents, parents and adults on a variety of challenges and concerns; and within the social welfare context. I have also worked at The Centre for Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) as part of a community action group, at Childline and at the Teddy Bear Clinic during my training. My research was in the areas of transracial adoption, family and race relations in South Africa.
I practice as a counselling psychologist doing therapy, assessment and community work. I am able to work with a range of clients across the lifespan, including children, adolescents and adults within therapy and assessment. I offer both short term and long term intervention.
My community work entails psycho-educational workshops which address a variety of South African social issues. I ran a community project with Epworth Children's Village in Thembisa schools focusing on psycho-education with learners and teachers on issues facing adolescents in the community.
I also work at the Mulbarton Hospital Psychiatric Unit where I conduct group psychotherapy interventions. I have previously run a support group for depression and anxiety for these out-patients and other individuals with these diagnoses.
I consult at the Paediatric ICU and Paediatric ward at the Clinton Clinic Hospital supporting patients and their families. I am trained in parent-infant psychotherapy (PIP), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Imago Therapy.
I am interested in understanding oneself on a deeper level. I enjoy working with all aspects of the family, relationships, infant mental health and self-discovery.
I have an associate in my practice, Tamara Sosa. She is a competant registered Counselling Psychologist. We work in similar ways and use the same theoretical and ethical base for our practice. Working together allows us to assist more individuals therapeutically. Tamara also runs her own independent practice in Mulbarton, Alberton.
In March 2022 I made the jump to relocate out of Johannesburg. My practice is continuing under the guidance of Chevonne Powell of Meaningful Minds. The practice is now run completely by Chevonne and her team at Meaningful Minds. They are a team of psychologists who are able to provide the same service I have for many years from the same location in Randhart and other parts of Johannesburg.
